On May 9, the exhibition “Terra Sol Liberdade” opened at the Leopoldo de Almeida Museum, commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Jorge Vieira Museum in Beja. These three words were of great importance to Jorge Vieira’s work: the earth, both sculpted and conceptual; the sun, representing energy and light; and freedom, ever-present in his artistic and civic endeavors.
The exhibition stems from an artist residency held in Beringel, a land of clay and brick, where the invited artists worked for ten days side by side with local masters António Mestre and José Manuel Parreira, guardians of artisanal knowledge linked to clay and brick.
From this encounter between tradition and experimentation emerged new works that now intersect with Jorge Vieira’s body of work.
Two students from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon, winners of an internal competition, also participated, reinforcing the idea of intergenerational transmission that the sculptor always promoted.
The names featured in the exhibition bear witness to this diversity and the connection to Jorge Vieira and Beja: Bárbara Rodrigues, Cláudia Guerreiro, Heitor Figueiredo, Marta Castelo, Rita Carreira, Suzana Henriqueta, Tiago Mestre, and Virgínia Fróis.
Joining them is Noémia Cruz, a sculptor who worked with Jorge Vieira and who, over the years, has kept his memory alive.
The exhibition runs through June 28, with free admission.
