On 28 and 29 March, the third edition of Tame the Fire will take place at the Caldas da Rainha Arts Centre.
Organised by CENTRA – Associação dos Amigos do Centro de Artes (Association of Friends of the Arts Centre), with the support of Caldas da Rainha City Council and as part of the UNESCO Programme: Caldas da Rainha, Creative City, the event once again brings together a series of actions around fire.
The first day begins with the lighting of the bonfire, a symbolic moment at the start of the Festival, as well as the opening of the exhibition Cerâmica XL, by the artists’ group “Convergências”.
A paper kiln will be built, a project by ceramicist Vítor Reis, and potter Miguel Neto will present the art of shaping clay using the Raku technique. Together, they will enrich the event with demonstrations of artisanal ceramic firing techniques that will give rise to unique pieces made on site and unveiled live.
This edition will feature cutlers Fábio Santos and Paulo Xande, who will demonstrate forge work, thus taking us on a journey to the origins of ancestral iron modelling processes.
Also taking part in the demonstrations will be artist and researcher Robert Wiley, who will present us with the delicate art of glass blowing.
There will also be a Crafts Market, with the presence of local associations: DOCA, Armazém Zero, Lombo do Ferreiro and Colectivo19, which will showcase the artisans who keep traditional identity and culture alive.
The programme also includes gastronomy with Paulo Santos (Forno do Beco), accompanied by repeat guests Ruben Ferreira and Archil Shinjikashvili (Geo Wine & Supra) and newcomer Restaurante Maratona.
To liven up these two days, on Friday we have the experimental sounds of Paulo Vicente, with the presentation of his album ‘O martelo dança e canta antes de se levantar’ (The hammer dances and sings before it rises). Saturday will be enlivened by the accordion of Victor Pastor and the electronic music of DJs 27 Pablo, Torso and João Paulo Feliciano. From iron to clay, everyone is invited to get their hands dirty. We invite visitors to try their hand at the forge for the more daring, the Raku for the more modest or the clay for the little ones.
